Huawei Y9 Review: Design, Battery Life and Camera Quality
Huawei Y9 Review: The Y-series of Huawei has always targeted budget buyers and always had a lower price point compared to other smartphones of Huawei. Y9 2019 enters this year at a price of Rs. 37,999. This is not mid-range pricing, so do the specifications at least justify its price? Let’s see.
Huawei Y9 Design
Unlike other Huawei phones we have seen so far, Y9 2019 has no glass sandwich design. It relates to a plastic back that looks like glass and feels weak when you hold it in your hand. There is no USB Type – C port on the Y9 2019, but we accept that Huawei only uses micro USB ports for its mid-rangers. The power button and the volume rocker on the phone side are a little too close, but a good choice of design saves the day. The power button is textured and you can easily say that you press the volume or power buttons and make things less confusing. Its display is massive, with a resolution panel of 6.5′′ IPS Full HD+ (1080x 2340) and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 thanks to the top notch. The angles of view were good and you will have no problems using the display in direct sunlight outside. The display is on the reflective side, however. The belts are not all that thin, making the phone a bit more bulky than flagships with a similar screen size. Thanks to its large screen size, it was a pleasure to play games and use the phone for multimedia apps.
Huawei Y9 Perofrmance
Huawei Y9 2019 comes with a 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage HiSilicon Kirin 710 processor. Storage can be expanded with a microSD card slot. Day – to – day performance was nothing more than normal, apps were quickly opened without stuttering or lagging between them. Multitasking was also a breeze with the reloading of none of the apps. More heavy apps did reload, but only when I also had many other apps open in the background. The Mali-G51 GPU handles the gaming needs. Framerates were not high precision, but stable. Typical medium – size stuff.
Huawei Y9 Camera Quality
There was a trend in Huawei cellphones with dual front and rear cameras (4 in total). We also see this trend in Y9 2019. It comes with a 16 MP f/2.0 camera on the back with a deep sensing module of 2 MP f/2.4. Y9 2019 has a 13 MP main camera with a f/1.8 aperture for portrait mode shots with a similar 2 MP f/2.4 lens. The camera app is similar to other Huawei phones with AI mode, HDR and other toggles on the right side of the viewfinder on the left. The AI mode over-saturates colors and does not improve the quality of the image. HDR has neither improved the dynamic range nor recovered image shadows. The quality of the camera was good but not excellent with some noise for daylight shots. Low light shots were not good at all, with a lot of noise and almost no detail. The front cameras offered similar quality levels, but the portrait mode was a hit or a miss, in particular in low light.
The best thing about the Y9 2019 is probably its battery life. It has a large battery unit of 4,000 mAh, but there is no quick charge. Due to their software optimizations, Huawei phones are generally good for battery life. Y9 2019 in our case was especially good. In our use, we played games on the phone and watched videos on YouTube and used them for social media. Mobile data was all day long and the luminosity was between 50 and 100 percent. All that the phone gave us a 9-hour screen with 4 percent remaining. Even if you are a power user, you can still get a lot from the Huawei Y9.
The phone is a complete package with a nice look, decent performance, good cameras, and a battery all day long. The battery life, in particular, was pretty good, the large screen of the phone did not hinder it in any way. The phone is well suited for multimedia consumption and gaming when talking about the large display. The 2019 Huawei Y9 certainly deserves “Thumbs UP”. If you go for it, 37,999 is a good option.
