Almost all beginner bloggers ask common questions, so I’ll give you the answers in advance, so you know exactly what to expect from this process!
How long does it take to start a blog?
Although it is difficult to set a schedule for the creative process of choosing a blog topic, once you know what you want to write on, you can interrupt the technical process of creating a blog in just 20-30 days. It’s easier than you think!
Is it expensive to start a blog?
Nope! Although the method I recommend is not 100% free, you can start using your blog for about $ 57 for the first year, less than $ 5 a month.
Can I use one of these free platforms to create blog?
Free platforms are suitable for leisure blogs. But the truth is that you have virtually no control over free platforms, and if they had to shut down, you would lose your blog. The method I am going to show you gives you the most control, protects your content and is ideal if you ever want to make money with your blog.
Should I be one of those geniuses of TV technology to create blog?
Nope! As long as you feel comfortable using a computer and surfing the Internet, you should not have trouble starting your blog. No special knowledge required.

In addition to the creative aspect of choosing the topic of the blog, here are the steps to follow to connect online in 20-30 minutes:
- Register a domain name – This is the permanent address of your blog on the Internet.
- Buy Website – This is the engine that powers your blog.
- Install WordPress – This is the best platform for creating a blog.
- Set up your blog and start writing – this is the fun part!
I will start at the beginning – choose a blog topic. But if you are already 100% sure of what you want to write, go directly to the technical part of creating a blog (Step 3).
Step 1: Choose a topic – is your blog for fun or money?
If you’re planning on blogging for fun, you do not need to read this section because choosing a topic is simple:
It is what interests you!
But if you have monetary hopes for your blog, things can get a little more complicated.
You see, sometimes what you love most about writing is not necessarily something that will earn you money.
And since it’s hard to change the subject of your blog later, if your ultimate goal is monetization, you should strive to determine if you have an audience and monetization options before creating your blog.
Try to answer these three questions:
- Do I like to write about this?
There is no way around this fact. Building a blog takes time. I’m not talking about the technical part. It’s easy enough. But once your blog is launched, it will take some time to make it a site that attracts regular visitors. For this reason, it is important that you choose a subject on which you can write in the long term.
Of course, you could have a passing interest today. But will you continue to write articles on the subject in two months, even if your blog does not receive thousands of visitors?
If you are not passionate, it will be a hard battle to try to regularly post new messages.
- Are other people interested in this?
If you have discovered a topic that will fascinate you in the foreseeable future, go to the next question:
“Are other people as passionate about the subject as I am?”
This one is pretty simple.
If you want to be able to create an audience, it is useful to know that people are interested in your subject.
Do not worry, and you do not need to know how to read minds to do it.
There are free internet search tools that can help you determine if there is an interested audience:
KWFinder – This free tool allows you to enter a “keyword” to know its popularity. A keyword is essentially a phrase that people search for in Google. If many people are searching for this topic on Google, you can be sure there is a large audience.
Try to think of the words that best describe your subject, then enter them in the box and click Search Keywords.
You should see a series of results with a number indicating the number of people looking for that term per month. Ideally, you will want to see numbers with thousands of monthly searches. For example, the subject of this message (very popular topic) receives more than 110,000 searches per month:
Your blog might include many potential “keywords,” so you should repeat this process for various topics that your blog might discuss.
Facebook Groups – Facebook provides a great way to measure interest in the topic you choose. Try searching for Facebook Groups that discuss similar topics and see how many active members they have.
If you find a group with thousands of members, it’s a good sign that your topic has interested viewers:
Google Trends – This tool is a little easier to use and allows you to quickly see if the interest in your chosen topic increases or decreases (the increase is better!).
- Can I earn money with this blog?
If you are creative enough, it is possible to earn money with most subjects. But some issues are more suitable for monetization than others.
This example is commercial, but if you have a popular blog about strategies to better use credit cards, you can bet that credit card companies are knocking at your door wanting to throw you money.
If you plan to make money with your blog, try answering questions such as:
- Are there companies that are interested in paying for exposure to my audience?
- Does it seem that other blogs that cover this topic can find monetization opportunities?
- Can I create my product on the line, like an e-book, that people may be interested in buying?
Step 2: Select the blog platform – I recommend WordPress
If you want to create blog, there is only one platform that I recommend now:
- WordPress that is hosting itself.
- It does not not only powers the blog you’re reading but also gives power to 29% of all websites on the Internet.
- WordPress powers more than a quarter of every website you use.
So, whether you have heard of WordPress or not, I can guarantee that you have used a website that is powered by WordPress at some point in your life.
Why is WordPress the best platform to create blog?
If you aren’t fascinated by the impressive market share of WordPress, here are some concrete reasons why WordPress is the best platform to start your blog:
- Very easy to use – WordPress is quite simple to use so even non-technical people can publish blog posts.
- It has a large community – WordPress is so popular that it’s easy to find help if you’ve experienced a problem.
- It’s easy to add functionality – Because of things called “themes” and “plugins,” it’s easy to change the look and function of your blog without requiring special technical knowledge (more about this later!)
You should not use WordPress.com
Here’s the confusing part about WordPress:
There are two different platforms called “WordPress”:
org – This is what I recommend. It is a non-profit open source software developed by a large community.
com – This is a non-profit service built on open-source WordPress.org software.
WordPress.com lets you create basic blogs for free. But:
- You don’t have complete control over your website, which means you never really have 100% of your blog.
- It’s difficult to adjust your website because you can’t access WordPress plugins or themes unless you pay for expensive business packages.
com provides some limitations on how you can monetize your site.
With WordPress.org, you install free WordPress software on your web host, which means you are 100% in control of your website. It’s a little more involved to get started, but the results are definitely worth the extra effort.
Apart from having everything, you can also tweak whatever you want and money as you like.
Here’s the point: If you are serious about your blog, using WordPress.org which is hosting itself is a better choice than using WordPress.com, even with WordPress.com offers for “free” (but limited) blogs.
Step 3: Register a domain name
Now that we’ve explained how to choose a topic and a blogging platform, it’s time to dig into the technical details of creating a blog, starting with:
Your domain name
Your domain name has two main purposes:
- It is the permanent address of your blog on the Internet. Once everything is set up, anyone can enter your domain name into their browser’s address bar and access your site from anywhere in the world.
- It is the mark of your blog. Usually, your domain name will be the same as your blog. The choice of a domain name is, therefore, a very important brand decision.
What makes a good domain name?
It depends largely on personal choice and branding. For example, two of the most popular sites, Google and Facebook, have unique names that would be difficult to generate from a “formula.”
As these examples suggest, many sites fail to break these rules. But in general, here are some good guidelines:
- Choose something that is relevant – Choosing a name that relates to your topic helps people quickly understand what your website is. For example, this blog is on blogging, so – com
- Give it a brand image too – you want something easy to tag so people can remember your blog.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers – Avoid the desire for creativity with hyphens or numbers. People have trouble remembering it!
- Use a .com if possible – While other domain extensions are becoming more popular, it’s best to choose a .com domain name if possible. If you find a good domain name using something else, you can still ignore it.
How to find the available domain names?
Here is the most tricky part about domain names:
- Each domain name can only belong to one person at a time.
- Think about it. If anyone could buy Facebook.com, the Internet would be chaos, would not it?
- So, to buy a domain name, you must find one that is “available.” In other words, you must search for a domain name that no one currently owns.
- It can be a daunting challenge, but there are many tools to make the job easier.
First, to quickly check if a domain name is available, Instant Domain Search is as simple as possible. Just type in your desired domain name, and the tool will tell you if it is available or not:
If you still find domain names that are no longer available, you can also use a blog name generator. A blog name generator returns a list of relevant domain names that are guaranteed to be available. All it does is enter a word related to its subject, and these tools will do the rest:
How to buy your chosen domain name?
Once you find a domain name that you like and that is available, it’s time to buy it!
While it is possible to register a domain name directly through your web hosting provider, I do not recommend this approach for a couple of reasons:
Create a single point of failure for your website because both your domain and your web hosting are located in the same place. It is bad for security.
It makes it harder to move hosts, which you probably want to do as your blog starts to grow in popularity.
Instead, I recommend a separate service called Namecheap because it is:
- Sure: this is important because if someone gains access to your domain name, you will have full control over your blog.
- Affordable: Namecheap only charges ~ $ 10 per year to register a .com domain, while most hosts increase the price (even if they give you a “free” year in the beginning).
- Convenient: Registering on Namecheap means you can easily control your domain name if you ever need to change something in the future.

- Enter your chosen domain name in the search box:

Once you pay, you officially own your domain name! Now all you have to do is connect it to a web hosting.

Step 5: Install WordPress on your web host
As I mentioned, the great thing about SiteGround is that you do not need to install WordPress.
Instead, complete a simple setup wizard.
When you sign in to your SiteGround account for the first time, a prompt asking you to set up your website is displayed:
- Choose Start a new website
- Select the WordPress software
- Enter the account details you will use to sign in to your blog.
- Click Confirm
- On the next screen, click Complete Setup.

A quick tour of the WordPress dashboard
Now that WordPress is installed, you can access the new dashboard of your Spanking brand.
The WordPress dashboard is essentially the control panel of your blog. It is where you go:
- Write your blog

- Add features to your blog
- Moderate comments on articles in your blog
- As well as many other important actions!
Accessing your dashboard is simple:
- Add / wp-admin at the end of your domain name (for example, com / wp-admin)
- Log in using the credentials you entered in the SiteGround Setup Wizard in the previous step.

A – It is in this space that you write and manage your blog articles.
B – This area allows you to create a different type of content called “page.” It’s good for things like contact pages and
C – This is where you can control the appearance of your blog using a “theme.”
D – This is where you control the operation of your blog using “plugins.”

Step 6: Choose a WordPress theme (how your blog looks)
A WordPress theme determines how your blog looks and, to a lesser extent, some parts of how your blog works. It’s like the clothes on your website. And, since you can not go naked in public, your blog needs a theme to work.
Your blog will come with a default theme, but most people want to choose their theme to create blog.
Here is the good news: Because WordPress is so popular, there are thousands of free and premium themes to choose from.
These are some of the best places to find topics:
- WordPress.org – This is the official directory of WordPress themes. Includes thousands of free themes.
- ThemeForest: this is a popular market that contains thousands of premium themes.
- StudioPress – This is a great provider of premium themes. I have used a lot of his subjects over the years.
While some people will try to scare you into paying for a premium theme, there is nothing that makes a premium theme better than a free theme.
Premium themes often have better designs and features, but that is not universal. Therefore, if you have a tight budget, feel free to start with one of the free themes of WordPress.org or the blog post to which I have previously linked.
How to install your new theme?
To install your theme:
- Go to Appearance → Themes in your WordPress panel
- Click on Add new
For the free themes, you found on WordPress.org, search for the theme by name and click Install
For premium themes, click Upload theme and upload the ZIP file of your theme
Once you install your theme through any of the two methods, be sure to click the Activate button to activate it on your website!
How to customize your theme to make it yours?
Once you activate the chosen theme, you can take things one step further and customize it to be yours.
Most themes now support something called Customizer. With the Customizer, you can modify your theme using simple options in a live sandbox. That is, you can see the changes in your blog in real time, but those changes will not be effective until you post them.
To access this area, go to Appearance → Customize in your WordPress panel:
Feel free to play and be creative with all the available settings, because you can not break anything!
Two areas that you will want to pay attention to are the Widgets and Menus:
- Menus: allows you to configure the navigation menu of your site so that people can easily navigate their blog.
- Widgets: allow you to add great functionality to the sidebar of your blog, like a list of your latest publications.
Step 7: Select some WordPress plugins (how your blog works)
While the themes are mostly about appearance, plugins are all about functionality. They let you add anything, from a simple contact form to all eCommerce stores!
And, unlike themes, you can use as many plugins as you want (although you should try using only the plugins that you need).
You can find free and premium plugins for your site.
Here are some good places to start:
- WordPress.org – It holds an official free plugin directory with more than 50,000 different plugins to choose from.
- Code Canyon – A popular market for premium WordPress plugins.
Plugins that are needed by every blogger
Although many plugins offer niche functionality, there are also certain types of plugins that are needed by many bloggers.
Instead of repeating what I have written, you can check the list of plugins that I must have to get inspiration.

How to install the WordPress plugin?
To install the WordPress plugin:
Open Plugin → Add New on your WordPress dashboard
For free plugins that you find on WordPress.org, look for plugins with names and click Install Now
For premium plugins, click Upload Plugin and upload the ZIP file
After you install the plugin, make sure to activate it. Then, you can read the plugin instructions for how to use the plugin on your site.
Step 8: Create essential blog pages
Phew! We did it. You are finally ready to create content for your blog.
But before you start writing your first blog post (it’s the next one!), It’s a good idea to create main pages.
Unlike a publication, a “page” does not have a publication date. It’s just something that’s always there.
At a minimum, most blogs have pages for:
- About – This tells visitors what your blog is and a little more about yourself. You can see my page about here.
- Contact – A surprisingly high number of readers will want to contact you. Your contact page makes this possible. You can see my contact page here.
You may want to share more information, but these two pages provide a good foundation for giving readers the information they need.
How to create a new page in WordPress?
To create a new page:
- Go to Pages → Add new to your WordPress dashboard
- Enter the title of your page in the top box
- Enter the content of your page in the text editor
- Click Post when you’re done
Step 9: Write and post your first blog post
And now, for the super fun part – you are finally ready to write your first blog post and share your thoughts with the world!
Creating a blog post in WordPress is almost identical to creating a page. There are just a few adjustments.
First, go to Posts → Add New. Then:
- Enter the title of your blog post at the top
- Enter the text of your blog post in the edit box. You can use the formatting toolbar if you need to add bold, italic, and so on. It’s like Microsoft Word!
- If necessary, click the Add Media button to download and insert images.
- Choose a category or add one to the right
- Optional – add tags describing your blog right
- Click Publish when done.
Congratulations! You have just written your first blog.
